Holiday flights hit as plane skids onto highway at Italy's third busiest airport

A PLANE at Italy's third busiest airport has skidded off a runway and on to a highway near Milan, ploughing through a perimeter fence.

The incident with the DHL cargo plane happened at Bergamo’s Orio al Serio airport, which was closed for about two and a half hours early on Friday.

There were delays during the busy summer travel period, although officials said no one was injured.

Some flights were rerouted from the low-cost airline and cargo hub to Milan’s Malpensa airport.

Television images showed the plane’s nose partially blocking a roadway flanked by emergency vehicles.

Italian aviation officials said the Boeing 737 400 overshot the runway on landing from Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport just after 4am.

The pilot and first officer were both uninjured. The cause was under investigation.

The airport at Bergamo handles more than 10 million passengers last year.
