Holidaymakers urged to check plumbing

Summer holidaymakers are being warned to make sure their plumbing is in order before they go away to prevent returning to costly repair bills.

Water damage is a more common occurrence than theft, with claims in excess of £3,300 according to rural insurer NFU Mutual.

“The damage done by leaking water can be massive when both buildings and contents insurance claims are combined. It’s not just cold weather that can burst pipes and lead to a ruined home interior, ageing or poor quality plumbing and fittings could be the catalysts for a water leak incident at any time of year,” said chief claims manager Matthew Scott.

Research by Homesitters, a live-in home and pet sitting service, revealed that leaking plumbing and faulty lavatories were the most common cause of water disasters when owners left their homes.

Underwater plumbing, bursts to hot and cold storage tanks and faulty shower fittings were also particularly problematic, the survey said.

“Carrying out a full check of your plumbing before going away could save you a great amount of distress, inconvenience and cost when you return from your break,” said Mr Scott.
