How green is your business machine?

A YORKSHIRE university aims to find out what makes a successful green entrepreneur.

The University of Hull is searching for eco-friendly business people from around the country to take part in the project, which will be led by Professor David Gibbs of the Department of Geography.

The team will conduct detailed interviews with at least 50 green businesses as well as policymakers and support organisations over the next two years.

Researcher Kirstie O’Neill said: “We’re interested in what really motivates people to become green entrepreneurs, what challenges or opportunities they face and why some regions seem to foster green businesses more successfully than others.”

The team wants to speak to firms for whom an environmental commitment is central to their work, rather than merely an ‘add-on’.

“We’re looking for businesses that are doing something more fundamental than turning off light switches and recycling,” Ms O’Neill said.

“They might be processing their products in a more environmentally beneficial way or trying to influence consumers to make greener choices. They might also be concerned about the dominance of big business and be actively trying to make changes to the way their sector operates.”

Researchers would also like to hear from support organisations providing funding, advice and assistance for green businesses.

The study of the environment and the opportunities from combining economic development and environmental protection are among the department’s main strengths.
