Huge 963-apartment block with cinema, dance studio and gym to be built in Sheffield city centre

Developers have revealed fresh plans for a new 963-apartment block in Sheffield city centre with a cinema and gym aimed at students and young people.

Code Living, a student accommodation specialist, along with agents Staniforth Architects, submitted plans to Sheffield Council for the co-living tower block at the underutilised junctions of Wellington Street, Rockingham Street and Trafalgar Street.

In the application, Staniforth Architects said: “Ultimately, the location of the site lends itself to the opportunity of creating an urban marker in the cityscape; a navigational tool helping to locate the city centre from various viewpoints such as Devonshire Street, Bramall Lane and St. Mary’s Road. This needs to be done carefully in a way that complements the topography and skyline, working with the rise and fall of the cityscape.”

There would also be a gym, cinema rooms, dance studios, cafes, study areas, cycle storage, common rooms, prayer rooms, high speed internet, courtyard garden, 24 hour security, games rooms and ground floor retail.

The application follows various earlier plans for similar projects. The height of this latest proposal is 26 storeys, a decrease from the 38 storeys proposed in the last approved plans – it was cut down due to viability issues worsened by rising construction and material costs.

The applicants said the development is expected to create 15 full-time jobs and 20 part-time jobs. So far, there are no comments from members of the public on the plans.
