Jobs boost in Thurston contract win

YORKSHIRE building firm Thurston plans to create 100 jobs after winning a £5m order to make freight containers for the German market.

Thurston Building Systems said it will take on welders, fabricators, shot-blasters and painters at its Yorkshire Marine Containers (YMCL) site in the Brandesburton area near Hull. Thurston, based in Wakefield, bought YMCL in February and the group currently has 165 staff.

The new jobs are initially for work on the German transport and logistics contract but the staff will also operate in the former YMCL site at Belprin site in Beverley, when it re-opens. Jonathan Petch, chief executive of Thurston, said: “This is an exciting time for Thurston’s and we are working towards growth, despite the economy.”

Thurston provides modular and portable buildings, which can be built off-site. The range can be built more quickly than conventional buildings without causing on-site disruption.
