Lowering the power

Households used less power this winter despite the coldest January for more than 20 years, energy giant Scottish & Southern Energy has revealed.

The UK's second largest utility company said its customers used on average around five per cent less gas and four per cent less electricity between October 1 and January 31, compared with the previous year.

SSE said lower power usage in an unseasonably warm October and November offset the rate of usage during the cold snap.
