My Passion: Rugby's core values provide sound principles for life

Like many youngsters, I was pretty much forced into playing rugby union at school, but I am tremendously glad of that now as the game has, and continues to play, such a large and fulfilling part in my life.

The enthusiasm of a school coach, Tony Wood, who was a governor at Hymers College in Hull, inspired my passion for the game. His love of rugby was infectious.

This continued throughout my school life and culminated, under the guidance of my school coach, Chris Fitzpatrick, in gaining selection for England under-18s grand slam-winning side.

I was then fortunate enough to go on and represent my country at all age-group levels, captaining England under-21s and playing on several occasions for the A team, now known as England Saxons.

Unfortunately, as is the danger with contact sport, injury struck just as I was on the verge of making the senior squad, and my career was put on hold.

I eventually made a successful comeback and enjoyed a professional career in the sport. Winning the Powergen Cup with Leeds, in 2003, playing in the Heineken Cup and playing in the French premiership, while living in the south-west of France, were exciting highlights of

my career.

A team game for people of all shapes and sizes, rugby is a superb preparation for life. The game's core values – teamwork, discipline and hard work – are sound principles for working life, and the leadership and man- management skills it develops come in handy, too.

Now retired from professional rugby and enjoying a second career in the new homes industry acquiring and managing land for development, rugby union is still central to my life, providing invaluable relief from the frustrations of the planning system.

Running out onto the pitch on Saturday afternoon is the perfect end to a working week and, as captain of Hull RUFC first XV, the game still offers plenty of excitement.

Playing a part in Hull RUFC finishing fifth in its first season in National League 2 this year – placing it in the top seven clubs in Yorkshire – was terrific.

This success was a real achievement for all involved and I am looking forward to the challenge of following that up this season.

Chris Murphy, land manager for Beal Homes.
