National role for KPMG partner Callinan

Dermot Callinan, who has led KPMG’s Northern Private Client Advisory team for the past 14 years, has been appointed head of the group’s national practice.

KPMG said this was the first time a partner outside of London had held the role.

Mr Callinan said: “I am delighted to take on the national leadership role but am going to do it from Leeds and I am totally committed to remaining here and to servicing our clients in Yorkshire.

“I have gained this opportunity because of the superb support I have from the Leeds Private Client team. KPMG’s UK private client practice now acts for clients with collective wealth of about £20bn. Our ambitious further growth plans are focused on both the domestic and international markets for our services.”

He said this was a time of significant change to the UK tax regime as entrepreneurial activity was encouraged by an extended entrepreneurs’ relief for capital gains tax and lower corporation tax rates while higher rates of personal tax were being introduced in response to the fiscal deficit.

“I foresee further, dramatic, developments on the horizon, linked to the Government’s new approach to tax policy making and possible changes to anti-avoidance rules.

“Our constructive tax advice, designed to maximise opportunities and minimise risk, will be valued by a wide range of the region and the nation’s entrepreneurs, business owners and investors.”

The team will advise wealthy individuals, family offices, entrepreneurs, high-earning executives and family business owners on their tax strategy, inheritance planning and compliance.

Mr Callinan has specialised in private client tax and wealth advice since starting practice in 1985 and has been with KPMG throughout most of his career.

The Northern team has reported strong growth recently and has advised many of the entrepreneurs involved in Yorkshire’s highest profile transactions in the last year.
