The new service will leave Doncaster at 5.07am and arrive into the capital at 07.00 on weekdays.

Virgin said it had created the early arrival to support demand from the business community in South Yorkshire.

Dan Fell, chief executive of Doncaster Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is good news for Doncaster to help further connect businesses in the North and South.

“Doncaster is renowned for its excellent rail connections and indeed whilst these additional rail services mean that business people can arrive in London for earlier breakfast appointments, it also means that more southern-based firms can leave London more frequently to do business in the North.”

Virgin will introduce a total of 19 additional services a week between Doncaster and London, and ten extra services at weekends between Leeds, Wakefield and London when its timetable changes on December 12.

It will also add a weekday late departure from London to Doncaster and York at 22.57, which it hopes will appeal to business and leisure travellers, including theatre goers.

David Horne, Managing Director for Virgin Trains on its east coast route, said: “This is a great boost to our customers travelling along the east coast from Yorkshire to London.”

Virgin is nearing completion of an overhaul of its trains, ahead of the introduction of a new fleet of “Azuma” trains in 2018, which it says will transform journeys on the east coast route.
