On the Spot with Mike Jackson

What was your first job?

Washing cars as a 12-year old in north Leeds. I was the forerunner to the hand wash operations now appearing all over the city. Among my biking pals I am known as Suds.

If you weren't in your present job, what would you like to do?

Drummer in a rock band. I studied percussion at Leeds College of Music and had visions of making it big. I am now a governor of the college which has an excellent reputation for jazz and popular music courses.

What was your worst mistake?

Not going to university.

What would be your ideal day be away from the office?

Heading off to the Lake District on my motorbike.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

Roald Dahl – because of his incredible imagination and wicked sense of humour.

What was your best subject at school?

It took me a long while to learn that I wasn't at school just to play sport. I excelled and surprised myself with economics which doesn't seem to be as popular nowadays.

What are your hobbies?

Not surprisingly dominated by sport and music, but I also have a passion for motor bikes and fast cars.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

I'd be extremely surprised as I don't enter. But I would love to have so much that I could set up my own charitable trust.

What is your top time saving tip?

Have a designated place for your car keys in the house, saves hours of searching every morning.

What is your favourite time of the day and why?

Dinner, time to share a convivial meal and wine with friends and family.

What is your favourite garment?

If you extended the meaning of garment a bit I would have to say I do like watches and have recently acquired a very nice one to mark a special birthday.

What is the best thing about Yorkshire?

The people. I have friends who moved up from the South three years ago who still wax lyrical about how friendly everybody is in Yorkshire.
