Platts’ work to help obese patients wins royal support

THE increasing number of obese patients is causing headaches for health professionals, but it’s also providing an opportunity for a Yorkshire manufacturer.

Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, has visited Sheffield-based Platts & Nisbett, a company that produces specialist surgical instruments.

Platts & Nisbett produces ‘made to measure’ left-handed instruments and devices for patients with weight problems.

The Prince was given a tour of the factory to see the instruments being made by hand, and he also chatted to apprentices and their mentors.

The family-owned company, which has 21 staff, was founded in 1977 by Ken Platts and Robert Nisbett.

Alyson Nisbett, the managing director, said: “The logistics and the marketplace may change over the years, but the core values of our company never alter.”

Julie Corrigon, the company’s business development manager, said: “We are currently in the process of registering with the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) and hope to begin exporting our products in the not too distant future.”

Ms Corrigon said the company wanted to raise awareness of its brand, and secure orders from the NHS Trusts and the private sector.

Platts & Nisbett also recently signed an agreement with Downs Distributors to represent its brand in New Zealand.
