Region's cities hotspots for freight crime

FREIGHT crime in Yorkshire and the Humber is 31 per cent above the UK average, according to information compiled by Truckpol, an organisation that compiles data on behalf of the freight industry.

Freight crime cost the region's economy 624,262 between June and November 2010, with 206 crimes being committed.

Doncaster, Huddersfield, Pontefract, Leeds and Sheffield are particular crime hot spots, representing 42 per cent of the freight crimes in the region.

A new project NS FRITS (North Sea Freight Intelligent Transport Solutions), which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, aims to reduce freight crime by improving intelligence.

David Ransom, the chief executive, of People United Against Crime, said: "The Yorkshire and Humber freight crime figures

illustrate why NS FRITS is such an important project.

"We are delighted to be involved in this initiative and we are looking forward to the pilots being launched later this year.

"We are hopeful that the project will help to tackle freight crime and reduce the cost to our economy, throughout the region, and in the UK and Europe."
