Review helps machine manufacturer to boost turnover

Engineering director Neil Pryke examined one of the machines created by manufacturing firm James H Heal which is diversifying into new markets after streamlining its operations following a review by the Manufacturing Advisory Service.

The Halifax-based company which supplies textile testing machinery for manufacturers who supply retailers including Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger and Marks & Spencer, is now making machines to test products such as hernia patches and wet wipes.

The family-owned firm was established in 1872 but now employs 85 staff, exports 90 per cent of its machines and is on target to reach a 7m turnover this year.

The advice included adopting 'leaner' processes to improve efficiency.
