Sir George returns to university roots

BUSINESSMAN Sir George Buckley has returned to the Yorkshire university which was the springboard to his career.

Knighted in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours, Sir George is now chairman, president and chief executive of US-based 3M, the multi-national company whose portfolio of iconic brands includes Scotch Tape and Post- It.

He visited Huddersfield University, where he studied for a BSc in electrical and electronic engineering in 1969 and subsequently gained a PhD in engineering.

Vice-chancellor Professor Bob Cryan updated him on the university’s latest developments including plans for a new design centre on Queen Street; a new £12m enterprise and innovation centre, now under construction; and a five-year, £8m project to ensure massive improvements in machine tool accuracy by the Centre for Precision Technologies.
