Smith & Nephew appoints Namal Nawana as new chief executive

Artificial hip and knee maker Smith & Nephew has appointed Namal Nawana to replace Olivier Bohuon as chief executive of the British company next month.

Mr Nawana was most recently chief executive of medical diagnostics company Alere, where he oversaw its £3.7bn acquisition by Abbott in 2017, Smith & Nephew said.

He will take over from Bohuon, who said in October he would leave before the end of 2018, on May 7. His base salary will be $1.54m a year, the company said.

Mr Nawana said: “I am passionate about the medical devices industry where I have worked all my life and it is an honour to become the new Chief Executive of Smith & Nephew, a company I greatly admire.

Smith & Nephew was founded in East Yorkshire and is a major emloyed in the region.
