On the Spot with Barry Paschali

What was your first job?

Back in the early '80s I was a graduate trainee for Wimpey Construction, which offered me two fantastic years of varied training.

If you were not in your present job, what would you like to do?

Probably be a psychologist. I really enjoy observing human behaviour and interaction.

What would be your ideal day away from the office?

Enjoying a bike ride with my 12-year-old son and doing something completely unconnected to engineering – such as supporting various charity groups which includes clearing tables, serving beverages and collecting entrance fees for fund-raising events.

Name the one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

Alexander the Great. He was a great leader and I would like to find out some of his leadership techniques and use those skills to share knowledge with others.

What was your best subject at school?

I loved the sciences and had a natural ability to solve complex problems. I use this every day in my work to help reduce the environmental impact of organisations.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

I would use the money to support worthy charity causes.

What is the best thing about being in business in Yorkshire?

Yorkshire gives great business opportunities and is a good area to work in. However, it is vital to maintain a good reputation, because there is nowhere to hide. I have been amazed at how many people have approached me after hearing about what I do on the grapevine.

What is your top time-saving tip?

You can't do everything so you need to delegate as much as you can but still give support and direction.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

He made a difference.
