Clare McManus is director of Sheffield-based Eventus and Arts4WorkTraining.

What was your first job?

Working as a Saturday girl in Sayers, a famous Liverpool bakery chain.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would you be doing?

Spending more time on my own creativity, which seems to become more important as I age.

What was your worst mistake?

When I returned to London after studying mime and theatre in Paris, a theatre friend offered to introduce me to someone who was starting up a new theatre company. I said no. It became one of the leading touring companies.

What’s you ideal day away from the office?

A combination of art, outdoor or indoor, good food and good company.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why.

Dervla Murphy. She’s an extraordinary writer and adventurer who is fearless at setting off on her own to un-touristy parts of the world.

What was your best subject at school?

English literature. I was a great reader and we had a brilliant teacher in sixth form who encouraged us to form our own opinions and debate them vigorously.

What are your hobbies?

I made a resolution two years ago to do more sewing, which I used to love and plan to finish the cashmere blanket I started then.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Pay off my sons’ student loan fees.

What’s your favourite time of day?

Any time after about 11am. I’m not a morning person at all.

What’s the best thing about Yorkshire?

The contrasts and the sheer size. And, of course, a fantastic arts offer.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

She tried.
