What was your first job?

I was a boat builder for a few months.

If you weren’t in your present post, what would you be doing?

Working in the not-for-profit sector. I’m motivated by making worthy people’s lives better.

What was your worst mistake?

My most frequent regret is being inconsiderate.

What’s your ideal day away from the office?

Out at sea or in a wilderness.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu – to explore his outlook on life and to enjoy his humour.

What was your best subject at school?

English (and rowing).

What are your hobbies?

Sailing, preferably in a boat that is at least as long in feet as my age in years (60).

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Secure the future of my family; set up a trust, probably to help post-war orphans; and sail my own boat to the Galapagos.

Avoid process and bureaucracy and delegate responsibility.

My broad-brimmed sun hat.

Teatime.

Its people.
