On the Spot with John Hendrie

John Hendrie, an ex-professional footballer, is a sports consultant in the sports law department at Blacks Solicitors in Leeds.

What was your first job?

At 16 years old I was sent to Coventry to become an apprentice pro footballer – harder than it sounds. I recall the senior players having me stood on a stool, barely dressed, singing "Oh, Susanna, don't you cry for me", playing an imaginary banjo, which certainly wasn't in the job description.

If you weren't in your current position, what would you be doing?

Laid on a beach in the Caribbean.

What was your worst mistake?

I always try to take positives out of mistakes – no use crying over spilt milk.

What's your ideal day away from the office?

On a summer's day, golf and then into the 19th with the lads.

Name of person you would like to have dinner with and why?

Tiger Woods so we could discuss our handicaps.

What was your best subject at school?

PE, accounts and English – coming from a scotsman.

What are your hobbies?

Gym and golf.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Help out family and local charities.

What's your top time-saving tip?

To delegate someone else.

What's your favourite item of clothing?

Jeans and Timberland boots.

What's your favourite time of the day?

Early evening when there is time to chill.

What would your epitaph be?

Here for a good time, not a long time.
