On The Spot With Vanessa Fox

Vanessa Fox, partner and head of family law at hlw Keeble Hawson, a legal firm with offices in Sheffield, Leeds and Doncaster.

What was your first job?

Working as a barmaid in a pub.

If you weren’t in your current position what would you be doing?

As a young woman I wanted to be a novelist, and I still consider writing that first book. For a lawyer who is in court most days perhaps it would be 50 Shades of Black.

What was your worst mistake?

Very recently, asking one of my senior partners – whom I don’t see often – if he was enjoying his retirement (he isn’t remotely retired).

What would your ideal day away from the office be?

A long walk in the Lake District in October, followed by a glass of wine and lovely meal by a log fire.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with.

J K Rowling.

What was your best subject at school?

What are your hobbies?

There isn’t much spare time but I love cinema, I am in several book groups and I am currently trying to learn to dance the tango.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

I would treat my family and give to some cancer charities. I’d probably take a sabbatical and travel to far places for a while, but I’d definitely carry on working – family law is in my blood.

What’s your top time saving tip?

Delegate and handle every piece of paper only once.

What is your favourite time of day?

First thing in the morning, looking out of my bedroom window at the sky and thinking about the day ahead.

What is the best thing about Yorkshire?

The people, definitely.

What would your epitaph be?

If you throw your bread on the water you will receive it back one hundred fold – that is, to give is better than to receive.
