Student accommodation scheme aiming to set new standards

DEVELOPERS behind a £40m residential scheme at Bradford University say they hope it will become the first student accommodation in the country to achieve the highest environmental standard.

The Green student village, in Listerhills, aims to be the first BREEAM 'Outstanding' rated student accommodation facility in the UK when it opens in September 2011.

It is being developed by Listerhills SSV, a joint venture between The Hayatt Group and Welbeck Land, with Mi7 Developments as development managers. The scheme is being built by GB Building Solutions under a joint venture with Balfour Beatty Engineering Services.

The Green has been designed to create a step change in the way students in the university live. New technology will encourage students to be aware of energy consumption while design ideas, including central meet and eat areas, aim to aid cohesive community living.

The development, which will accommodate 1,000 students, is made up of 34 town houses and 101 apartments around a central water feature which re-uses rain water.

It is part of the university's 84m campus modernisation plan.

Mohammed Ishtiaq, managing director of Mi7 Developments, said: "With the ongoing support and commitment of our stakeholders, partners and design teams, we are now approaching the midway point of phase one, which is certainly considered the critical gateway to the wider scheme.

"With work soon starting on further phases, we will begin to see a transformation of this area which will have a lasting positive impact on the local economy and environment."
