Uber ‘provides good value for UK riders’

TECHNOLOGY start-up Uber, which describes itself as “everyone’s private driver”, has said it provides good value for customers, after a report said it was charging higher fares in Britain.

Uber works by connecting licensed drivers with passengers at the touch of a button via a smartphone app, cutting out traditional private hire firms.

A report in The Times stated that Uber is charging British customers more to use its taxi-hailing app than it does in the US. At £6.56, the average cost of a three-mile, 10-minute Uber ride in the UK is higher than the £5.18 it costs in the US, according to The Times. An Uber spokesman said: “Uber operates in over 300 cities and the products we offer vary from market to market. This research is fundamentally flawed as it does not compare like for like. For example, one of the products we offer in Paris is UberBLACK, this is typically a Mercedes E-Class, whilst in Warsaw we offer uberPOP, a peer-to-peer service with vehicles that generally have lower running costs. Regardless of location, we strive to ensure that our service is good value for riders whilst still providing our partner drivers with an attractive economic opportunity.”

Uber recently brought its driver-hailing service to Leeds and Sheffield. According to The Times, a 10-minute, three mile ride in Leeds and Sheffield costs £5.85.
