Venture to create the next generation of retailers

RETAILERS are facing hard times as consumer confidence is squeezed by the crisis in the eurozone.

A group of Yorkshire crafts people have joined forces in a bid to increase their sales during a period of economic uncertain- ty.

The Created in Yorkshire store has been launched in Wakefield’s Ridings Shopping Centre to give fledgling entrepreneurs the chance to find out about grassroots retailing.

It’s hoped that it will stimulate economic activity by attracting a new generation of shoppers.

The store offers a range of hand-made goods from a collective of 25 independent retailers.

Created in Yorkshire will be run as a co-operative, with each independent retailer playing a role in manning the store and selling the goods of fellow artists and crafts people.

Created in Yorkshire will be managed by local business woman Lynne Thompson, who believes it will enable local artists to get an insight into the world of selling.

Some of them may be testing their goods in the market for the first time, while others will be seeking a new outlet for their products, according to Ms Thompson.

She added: “For some, Created in Yorkshire is helping them to turn a hobby into a new business venture.”

Barbara Winston, the centre manager at The Ridings Shopping Centre, said: “We are looking for new ways to strengthen the high street and encourage footfall into our centre to the benefit of all stores.

“The independent retailers bring unique concepts to our shoppers, which provide an excellent mix alongside our leading high street stores.

“We have worked closely with Lynne to develop the idea and look forward to supporting 25 independent retailers as they develop this model.”

Created in Yorkshire follows other retail initiatives, which have been launched by the Ridings Shopping Centre in a bid to attract more shoppers.

The Yorkshire Market, a monthly Sunday market, has grown from two to 32 stalls in a year.

The shopping centre has also established the Pop-Up Boutique, which allows fashion-led independent retailers to trade over one weekend a month.
