VirtualDCS to help Work flow smoothly

Leeds-based IT services company virtualDCS has secured a contract for an undisclosed sum to help global employer marketing and talent management business Work Group become more competitive.

As part of its service, Work Group runs recruitment websites for its clients. The information for these sites was previously stored on computer servers at the company's data centre in London. Work Group approached virtualDCS to transfer all the website information held on its servers to a secure data centre in the UK so it could reduce costs and lower its carbon footprint.

By moving its data out of the office and accessing it remotely over the internet, Work Group is using a system known as 'cloud computing' or 'the cloud'. The same technology is used by popular applications such as Facebook, Twitter and Hotmail where servers are based in data centres and accessed through the internet.

Andy Grant, IT manager at the London-based Work Group, said: "We are now in a position where we have an unprecedented level of website availability for our clients.

"At the same time our need for expensive hardware has dwindled leading to an immediate cut in our capital expenditure. Our energy consumption has also improved."

Work Group's client list includes housing associations, global investment banks, emergency services and leading retailers.

VirtualDCS, which has five staff and 750,000 turnover, was established in 2008 by Richard May, John Murray and Dan Nichols.
