Wind turbine factory opposition ‘madness’

AN MP has labelled moves by his local council to oppose a neighbouring authority’s plans for a huge wind turbine factory as “madness”.

Hull Council planners are recommending that an objection is lodged against Able UK’s proposals for a marine energy park at Killingholme on the south bank of the Humber, which could create around 4,000 jobs.

Officials say developers should have looked at other sites including Hull Docks, which Siemens has already earmarked for a wind turbine factory. They state: “Until adequate justification is given for why sites in Hull have been discounted the council cannot support the application.”

However Hull East MP Karl Turner said: “We have got to look at this with a view to making the area a pan-Humber area for green technology. It is madness to be protective in this way.”

Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson said the recommendation, to be discussed by the new Labour Cabinet next week, “encapsulates everything that was wrong about (the previous administration’s) approach to the huge economic potential of the Humber.”
