Yorkshire Post campaign: 60 ways to reduce the north-south divide

TODAY the Yorkshire Post calls on the Government to take note as we publish 60 proposals which could deliver the region a fair deal and help crack the North-South divide.

From vital transport schemes that could unblock roads and railways to targeted incentives to boost small businesses, the list offers a constructive set of proposals to help the Prime Minister live up to his promise to rebalance the economy.

It also calls on councils and businesses in the region to do their bit to create jobs, give young people a brighter future and make Yorkshire a more prosperous place.

As the fragile state of the economy looms large over the Conservative conference starting in Manchester tomorrow, this is the time to act and prove the Government is serious about putting its words into action.

In just three months our campaign - which was launched after we revealed a growing jobs and house building divide between the South East and Yorkshire and showed how the region is disadvantaged on public funding, investment opportunities and lacks a united voice - has won widespread support from politicians of all colours, businesses and readers.

We have welcomed the fact that David Cameron and Nick Clegg have engaged with it and spoken of their determination to deliver a more balanced Britain.

But we make no apologies for keeping up the pressure for a fair deal because there is far more yet to do. Our proposals, reproduced in hundreds of pamphlets, show how the Government could make progress.

This week, Mr Cameron’s most pressing task is to convince the nation his economic recipe is still the right one. Allowing Yorkshire to prosper will help the economy of the entire UK recover and reduce the deficit - but we need a fair deal in order to do it.
