Yorkshire’s medium sized firms outstrip rest of UK

Yorkshire and the Humber has seen its share of the country’s top 100 fast-growing mid-market businesses grow by a faster rate than any other region, according to new research by the specialist bank Investec.

Some 13 of the companies on the list are based in the region, an increase of 63 per cent from the eight recorded in June. Only two regions have more businesses in the list: the north-west, which has 14, and London, with 30.

Across the country, the top 100 mid-market firms achieved growth of 40.4​ per cent,​ but Yorkshire businesses ​beat this with growth of ​43 per cent.

​​Prominent companies ​in​ the region include Leeds-based​​ public services recruitment firm​ Gatenby Sanderson,​ ​Leeds-based​ lubricants business Vickers Oil, Shipley-based Stainforth Construction and ​ Hull’s leading fish merchant and seafood wholesaler Copernus​.​​

While London is the stand-out success in the South of England since the June survey, the South-East is down 73​ per cent​ to four companies, with the South-West down 33​ per cent​ to eight​ firms​.

By contrast, the northern regions of England are exhibiting strong growth. Between them, the north-east, north-west and Yorkshire and the Humber account for the same number of companies as London, a 25​ per cent​ increase from the previous survey.
