To mark the day which should have seen farms across the country open their gates to the public for a behind-the-scenes look at farming and food production, organisers Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) took the event online.

Eddie Andrews from Our Cow Molly streamed his presentation live from a field on LEAF’s Facebook page.

In it he talked about farmers being “custodians of carbon capture”, digging up a plug from the ground to show the roots and soil. He explained how the pasture captures carbon from the air and breaks it down, adding that grazing cows help stimulate grass growth so as well as producing great food they are helping the environment.

He also talked about different milk packaging, explaining how a glass milk bottle needed to be used 13 times before it became an environmental positive.

LEAF is hoping to hold an on-farm Open Farm Sunday on September 20. Videos from the virtual event are at facebook.com/LEAFopenfarmsunday/
