Bishop Burton is celebrating National Careers Week with news that 98% of its students move on to a positive destination.

Well above the national average, this impressive statistic is testament to the college’s dedication and commitment to one of the primary roles of an education provider – to prepare students for what happens next. Whether that’s moving onto further study, an apprenticeship or directly into employment, equipping them with the skills necessary to transition onto the next chapter of their lives is fundamental.

Many have a clear and defined idea of where they see themselves in terms of a career, whilst others follow their hearts and choose to study something that they are interested in with no clear path in mind. Whatever the starting point, Bishop Burton has ensured that effective employer partnerships and career support is in place to assist students with planning their future.

Dedicated careers teamThe college’s enthusiastic careers team runs an annual programme, designed to help students improve their understanding, awareness and knowledge by providing them with hands-on practical experience of their chosen industry.

Throughout their time at college students work with industry experienced tutors who develop their skills to provide them with the insight and capability they require to be successful in their chosen career path. Students also have the opportunity to work directly with potential employers gaining invaluable and practical first-hand industry experience. All of which is designed to create highly employable and valuable candidates for future opportunities.

Head of student experience, Katy Langfield said: “The vocational nature of our courses and the expertise of our teaching staff in combination with our robust careers programme enhances the student’s understanding of employability and develops new and existing skills to give them the edge when competing for jobs, higher education places or apprenticeships.”

Industry experienced tutors and direct employer linksA great example of the experience of the teaching staff inspiring and informing students is Jade, who undertook the college’s BTEC Level 2 in Public Services. She said of her time at college: “My tutor had experience in the military which ensured we had a knowledgeable learning environment.”

This invaluable perspective gave her great insight into joining the armed forces and on completion of her studies she embarked on a career with the Navy and commenced training to be an above water technician.

Whilst students are seeing this approach pay dividends the college’s employment partners can also see the benefit. Many of the college’s courses are actively supporting industries that have a significant skills gap, for example in precision agriculture, whilst other employers such as Stuart Liversedge from Active IQ, one of the college’s sports industry partners can see how the college is preparing students to be highly employable individuals.

He said: “The college has a clear vision for their student journey that will lead the students on a path towards employability at the end of their studies. The college is focussed on working towards qualifications that offer their students a licence to be proactive within the Active Leisure sector to help them secure employment within the world of work.”
