Festival to celebrate diversity brings arts to the streets

WET weather did not dampen the spirits at a street festival of music, poetry, dance and drama in Leeds city centre.

Planet Leeds has been running in the city since 2007 in an attempt to “celebrate diversity without getting involved in the politics”.

The event saw live acts including bands, poets and dance groups performing on two stages in the city centre on Saturday. They were in Briggate and at Kirkgate Market.

The festival’s line up included Dylan Brierly, The Retrolettes, Chapeltown Community Choral, Urban Sprawl and the Dance Company.

Five organisations and charities help to stage Planet Leeds. They are Artsmix, a social enterprise supporting artists in the city; Leeds City of Sanctuary, which aims to support people seeking refuge in the city; On the Edge, a community arts organisation; Together for Peace. a Leeds-based charity and Stronger Leeds, part of the council-led Leeds initiative which aims to make the city “safer, stronger and better connected”.
