Former cricket ace opens academy with link to his university

CRICKET legend Imran Khan has officially opened a new academy sponsored by Bradford University, where he is chancellor.

The former cricket player-turned politician was the guest of honour at the University Academy Keighley to unveil a plaque and present awards to pupils.

The academy, which replaced Greenhead High, in Keighley, in September last year, is backed by Bradford University.

Its new building opened to pupils in May this year and was constructed as part of Bradford Council’s Building Schools for the Future programme.

It shares a site with Beechcliffe Secondary Special School.

The building benefits from new ICT facilities, a dance studio and new running track.

Mr Khan said: “It is a real privilege to open such a wonderful new facility.

“I think it’s an amazing building and will provide inspiration to pupils in Keighley for many years to come, and will be a hub for the community.”

Tricia McCarthy, academy principal said: “Although we only moved in to the building in May, we are already seeing the benefits. Many members of the community took the opportunity to look around earlier this term, and many of our local primary schools have already been involved in curriculum experiences in science for example.

“Bradford University, our sponsors, have spent a day with our year seven students engaged in activities we could not normally offer, such as chemical and forensic science, rockets, a planetarium and drama.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in opening the school, and Mr Khan for opening the school for us and for being an inspiration to so many of our pupils.”
