Full list of Yorkshire schools threatened by Ofsted downgrading

The education watchdog is making it more difficult to receive the top rating from inspectors and is also abolishing its “satisfactory” category in an attempt to crackdown on mediocre and coasting schools.

Both measures could have a major impact on schools in Yorkshire.

Schools can currently receive one of four grades in inspection reports: outstanding, good, satisfactory or inadequate, and these are based on overall performance across four indicators. A school can be judged to have good teaching but still be graded as outstanding overall if it achieves top ratings in other areas such as pupil performance, leadership and management and its capacity to improve.

There are 87 schools across the region which could lose their outstanding status because their teaching was only judged to be good while the outstanding status of about 1,000 schools nationally could now be reviewed because their teaching was not of the very highest standard.

The list includes 19 schools in North Yorkshire, 11 in Leeds and eight in Rotherham.

Ofsted is also now replacing “satisfactory” with a new “requires improvement” grading.

Its new chief schools inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw said: “Once the requirement to improve category starts in September, there will be more schools going into special measures.

“But the thing about designating a school in a category is that there is a lot of attention on them.”

Schools are placed in special measures if they are found to be under-performing in many areas and need intensive support to improve.

An increase in schools going into special measures as a result of the satisfactory category being scrapped is likely to impact on Yorkshire.

The Yorkshire Post revealed in December the region has the country’s highest level of “mediocre and middling” schools with almost half the secondaries inspected been given the second lowest rating possible by Ofsted.

In his first keynote speech as chief inspector yesterday, Sir Michael told headteachers at an event in central London that one in five outstanding primaries, and half of outstanding secondary schools, about 1,000 schools in total, did not have outstanding teaching standards at their last inspection.

Sir Michael also told the event that top schools “should not luxuriate in their own outstandingness” and their headteachers had a “moral imperative and duty” to help others.

He is in discussions with the National College – which develops school leaders – to introduce “a sort of national service for outstanding heads and leaders” and these “conscripts” would join Ofsted on a small number of inspections – no more than six days of the year.

Sir Michael also reiterated his view that weak teachers should not receive pay rises, with only committed and hard-working staff given financial rewards.

He claimed it was “quite legitimate for Ofsted to look at the correlation between the quality of teaching and salary progression”.

“There is nothing more irritating in the staff room than seeing someone being promoted or getting more money, who is not doing as good a job as you are,” he said.
