Region’s schools among best in the country

MORE than one in 10 of the best performing state schools at A-level are in Yorkshire.

A range of grammar schools, academies, comprehensives and a sixth form college were named in a league table of the 200 best performers in the country based on their average point score at A-level in exams sat last summer.

Heckmondwike Grammar was named as the best performer in the region. It was one of five selective grammar schools from the region to be included.

Ermysted Grammar in Skipton, a selective boys school, was ranked second and Crossley Heath School in Halifax was third.

Skipton Girls High, which had the best GCSE results in Yorkshire, also featured in the A-level table, ranked fifth best in the region, while another of North Yorkshire’s grammar schools, Ripon was ranked seventh.

Greenhead College in Huddersfield was fourth best. The sixth form college is the major A-level provider in the town with year groups of more than 800 students.

Fulford School in York was the highest ranked non-selective school in the table – ranked sixth.

Other non-selective schools in the top 200 were the Hayfield School in Doncaster, Ilkley Grammar and Bingley Grammar.
