Role of higher fees debated as university applications plunge
A teaching union has become the first to accept the Government’s controversial pension reforms, breaking the unity which saw two million workers go on strike last year.
The Association of Teachers and Lecturers said a poll of its 160,000 members saw 91.6 per cent of respondents vote in favour of the proposals, which officials said were the best that could be achieved.
The decision means last November’s huge strike will not be repeated, although leaders of other unions are discussing further walk-outs.
