Top award for lecturer helping to improve global health research

Dr Padam Simkhada, senior lecturer in International Health at Sheffield University’s School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), was awarded the CEA Award of Global Health Research for his contribution to the field of global research at a special ceremony at the Mahatma Gandi University in India.

Dr Simkhada was born in a remote village in Nepal where he completed his proficiency certificate in medical science and batchelor’s degree in health education before gaining a MSc and PhD in Public Health in the UK. He has previously worked for Save the Children and the Ministry of Health in Nepal and is a visiting professor at the Pokhara University and Trivhuan University in Nepal.

He has published more than 70 research articles in scientific journals on issues including sexual health, migration and sex trafficking, maternal and child health and health promotion in middle and low income countries.

Dr Simkhada said: “I feel greatly honoured with this award as it has encouraged me to dedicate my work in improving the quality of higher education in the developing countries.”

Sheffield University say Dr Simkhada is working to build and international links and partnerships around the world.

ScHARR was formed in 1992 and is described by the university as “one of the largest and most dynamic schools of health research within the UK”.

The school is based in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health, and employs more than 300 members of staff. It brings together people from across the health sciences and public health, including clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, health economists and information scientists.
