University honours student volunteers for ‘humbling’ dedication

A LEADING university has recognised the efforts of its volunteering students as part of its commitment to ensure that young people make the most of their time in higher education.

The Leeds for Life initiative aims to get students to broaden their experiences by making sure they are aware of all the clubs, societies, volunteering and overseas travel opportunities Leeds University has to offer.

Now the university has held an awards ceremony to recognise the best examples of students volunteering.

Leeds University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor for Student Education, Prof Vivien Jones, said: “Our aim is to support the development of outstanding graduates who have gained valuable experiences and an ability to confidently articulate their own skills development through a wide range of activities.

“Volunteering forms part of this key offer to our students. We want our students to go forward into the world and continue to make a positive impact.”

The awards showcased a variety of volunteering work which Leeds University students have carried out. A Looking After Children Mentoring scheme was named as project of the year. Four students were named as joint winners of the Outstanding Contribution awards. Adam Whybro was one of the winners for his work on the Looking After Children Monitoring Scheme.

Harry Coleman was chosen for his work recruiting student volunteers for a homeless charity, Jane Mitchell received the award for hospital work in India and Ben Fisher was chosen for his work creating new volunteering opportunities within Leeds University Union. Elizabeth Lowenstein won the education award for her work leading a local action group raising awareness of issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers.

Leeds University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Michael Arthur, said: “I personally feel humbled by these amazing young people who despite significant academic and social commitments, still find the time and dedication to support others. As we enter challenging times for the sector as a whole the university has a firm commitment to Leeds for Life and the student experience.”
