Video: Huge blaze shuts showpiece Bradford school

FIREFIGHTERS in Bradford were this morning tackling a huge blaze which has shut one of the city’s showpiece secondary schools.

The alarm was raised just after 2am at the disused Yorkshire Martyrs School in Tong, which shares the site of the new Tong High School on Westgate Hill Street.

At its peak 100 firefighters were tackling the blaze, which is understood to have completely destroyed one of the school’s three blocks.

Tong High School is closed today as crews continue to extinguish the blaze.

Yorkshire Martyrs School closed last year as part of a reorganisation of Catholic schools in the district.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is now under way.

A notice on Tong School’s website read: “Due to a fire on the site of Yorkshire Martyrs School overnight, access to Tong High has been closed today.

“Tong High School will reopen tomorrow (September 14). We apologise for any inconvenience.”
