Matthew Burton was one of the stars of the Educating Yorkshire TV series filmed at Thornhill Community Academy, near Dewsbury. His work to help GCSE pupil Musharaf Asghar overcome a stammer was one of the most inspirational storylines from the award-winning Channel 4 documentary.

He has welcomed The Yorkshire Post’s plan to reward the best teaching in the county and the campaign promoting the importance of getting young people to be able to read and write.

He said: “Literacy is absolutely the cornerstone, not just of school life, but of life in general. It’s about being able to communicate. It’s about speaking to people in the right tone, it’s about reading and writing. Communication is basically what makes the world go round.”

He said ensuring pupils mastered the basics was essential.
