The Yorkshire students who picked up a haul of top grades

Among the students who picked up amazing results yesterday was Rizwaan Mohammed, 18, from Cottingham, who got six A*s and will now be studying natural sciences at Cambridge.

The student was among those picking up their grades at the independent Hymers College in Hull. He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I opened my results. My teachers have been so supportive so I’m glad I’ve done well for them.”

The school’s other top performers included Sushant Achawel, 18, from North Ferriby, who achieved five A*s and a B and is off to Cambridge to study engineering. He said: “Everyone has been really supportive; there’s a real culture of support at the college. No one is afraid to ask for help and I’ve learned so much and locked in so much information through helping other people.”

Amy Felgate, 18, from Tickton, near Beverley, gained four A*s and will study chemical engineering at Cambridge.

Schools reported similar success stories across the county yesterday.

Coco Ji, who joined Sheffield High School for the sixth form from China, had some initial issues with the language and cultural differences. However she has since gone on to achieve seven A* or A grades.

She has passed with an A* in maths, physics and psychology at A-level, an A at Chinese A-level grade, A grades in biology and critical thinking at AS level and another A* in her EPQ (Extended Project Qualification).

In Leeds Roundhay School pupil Lucy Coupe will now be studying English literature and language at Oxford after achieving five A* at A-levels.

The school’s other stars included Rachel Thompson who earned four A*s and is now to study law at Manchester University.

At Lawnswood School in Leeds there were three Oxbridge applicants who all secured places at Oxford:

David Ellis will study experiment psychology, having achieved two A*s and two A grades, Sam Haggerty will study chemistry, having achieved three A*s and an A while Ella Vickers Strutt will study Human Sciences, having achieved an A* and two AAs

Elsewhere in the city four pupils achieved A*s at the private Grammar School at Leeds.

Adam Bush, Daniel Drazen, Josephine Pepper and Ashwin Venkatesh all achieved the top grade in this year’s exams.

At Wakefield Girls High Neena Dugar, achieved 5 A*s and has been accepted into MIT. She is the first girl from the independent school to go on to study at the prestigious university in Massachusetts. At Ripon Grammar School Mary Kumarendran told of her surprise as she achieved five A* grades. She will now read medicine at Oxford University.

The 18-year old, from Northallerton, said: “I didn’t expect to get all A*s, I’m absolutely shocked but very, very happy.

“I come from a family with a scientific background so medicine is all I’ve ever thought about doing and to be able to do that at Oxford University is thrilling.”

At Queen Margaret’s School, in York, staff praised Fiona Zhou and Fennel Tse for achieving 100 per cent in their A- level maths papers. Both pupils achieved four A*s. Fiona is going to Imperial College, London to study actuarial accounting while Fennel has secured a place at Churchill College, Cambridge studying engineering.

At Bootham School in York there were several students who achieved five or more A* and A grades. Anisha Bandyopadhyay, Liam Bussell and Sylvia Ji achieved six while Vivi Luo, Dominique Brooke and William Dickens achieved five.

Across the city the Mount School hailed the achievement of two girls - one who has been with them since she was three and another former pupil who had returned to study in its sixth form.

Eloise Lake, who joined the independent Quaker school when she was three years old, has succeeded in gaining three A*’s and two A’s, to secure her place at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

Eve Ainscough, previously a Mount pupil, rejoined two years ago for sixth form. She celebrated achieving four A*s yesterday.

She plans to spend the year after A-levels volunteering abroad with a medical organisation before making her application to study medical school in the autumn.
