Nightclub in Yorkshire closes immediately until further notice due to coronavirus

Spiders nightclub on Cleveland Street in Hull has closed until further notices, staff Pete, Lynne and Keri posted on the nightclub's Facebook page.

In a post, the staff said they had come to the decision 'in the interest' of local residents and would keep members and staff updated on a 'weekly basis'.

The full post read: "We have come to the decision that in the interest of all Hull and East Yorkshire residents, our valued customers and staff, we have decided to close Spiders Nightclub immediately until further notice.

"This is the only responsible action we can take, considering the serious health threat currently posed to people in confined spaces.

"It should be obvious to all by now, that this virus spreads more virulently in environments such as ours.

"It is a step we did not want to take but peoples health must come first.

"We will keep all our members, customers and staff updated on a weekly basis.

A new case of coronavirus has been confirmed in York as the UK saw its biggest day-on-day increase in cases, with 87 people now confirmed to have the virus.

Three of the 32 new cases recorded in England were passed on in the UK, raising fears that community transmission may now be taking hold.

Councillor Keith Aspden, Leader of City of York Council, said the infected person had recently returned from northern Italy.

He added: "The individual has followed all necessary health advice, so there is a low risk of the virus being transferred.

"Any close contacts are being followed up by Public Health England.”

“We continue to be in close contact with partners across York and North Yorkshire, including health agencies, to receive specialist advice so that the City of York and North Yorkshire remain a safe place to live, work and visit.”

"We are confident that all the relevant services in the city and county are well-equipped and ready to respond. The safety of residents is a priority for both the Council and Public Health England.”
