A £2m appeal to buy Yorkshire's first MRI-PET scanner was launched today.

The device, a combination of two separate scanners, gives the most detailed images of inside the human body, and helps understanding of conditions including Alzheimer’s, cancer and heart disease.

The Sheffield Scanner campaign aims to bring one of the units - which would be among only eight in the UK - to the city’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Professor Dame Pamela Shaw, of Sheffield University, said: “With this innovative imaging technology our ambition is to develop new knowledge and treatments for patients more rapidly.”

A series of public fund-raising events is being staged to raise cash for the unit.

In June, the university will mount a walking challenge covering 50 miles in 24 hours, through the Peak District.
