Grade II-listed 17th-century house in Bridlington Old Town that's had fewer than 20 owners since 1718 for sale

A Grade II-listed house in Bridlington’s historic Old Town is up for sale.

West End House on Westgate dates back to 1625, and has had fewer than 20 owners since 1718 – many of them prominent families in the port.

The ‘imposing’ building required significant modernisation the last time it went on the market, but the current owner has improved and renovated the townhouse and remodelled it from a six-bedroom dwelling to a five-bedroom property with adjoining two-bedroom holiday let or annexe.

The house is known locally for its substantial south-facing gardens, which in the past have been included in the Old Town Association’s Secret Gardens charity event.

It has four reception rooms, five bedrooms and two bathrooms. There is a library, sun room and scullery. The lane that runs by the side of the house is also included in the sale, and the ample grounds include formal lawned gardens, patio area and mature trees.

The Georgian house was rebuilt and remodelled from an earlier cottage on the site, and the large cellar is thought to be a remnant of this building, with stone that is thought to have come from Bridlington Priory.

Westgate is home to several townhouses and other historic buildings, including The Avenue Hospital, an 18th-century property which was a boarding school house before it was converted for medical use in the 1930s, and was owned by the NHS until 1988. It is now apartments.

The house is on the market with estate agents Boulton Cooper, with the price supplied on request.
