Plan revealed to turn Grade II-listed bank in Yorkshire town centre into hotel

Permission has already been granted to convert the ground floor of the former Royal Bank of Scotland building on High Street into a restaurant or cafe.

A further planning application now seeks permission to transform the first and second floors into a hotel.

The Grade II listed 128-year-old building has stood empty since RBS closed its doors in 2018.

If approved, the scheme would provide 24 en-suite hotel bedrooms, with no external alterations to the building.

A planning statement by JR Planning Consultants states: “The proposed hotel would be a highly-complimentary use for other businesses in the town centre. Hotel customers would be likely to visit various other uses in the town centre, including the retail shops within the secondary chopping frontage.

“The hotel does not include any guest dining or bar areas and no commercial kitchen is therefore required either. It is anticipated that guests will make use of existing food and drink outlets in the town centre

“As the scheme would preserve the listed building and does not require any external alterations, it follows that the scheme would also preserve the historic character of the conservation area.”
