BRILLIANT sunshine welcomed the region’s VIPs to Wakefield for Yorkshire Day 2001.
The Merrie City took centre stage in a huge celebration of the county’s heritage, which began with a procession of civic dignitaries through the city centre to Wakefield Cathedral.

Hide AdAfter a special service, the parade made its way back to Wakefield Town Hall for lunch, followed by a speech from TV host Richard Whiteley.
In the cathedral precinct, there were fun and games with a brass band, face painting, majorettes and children’s rides. And Wakefield Town Hall put on special events with guided tours around County Hall, Yorkshire cream teas and a display of specialist produce from across the district, entitled Made in Wakefield.
Staff at Asda in Durkar put on a display of Yorkshire produce, and the Yorkshire Society launched its new website at www.yorkshiresociety.org.uk
