Focus proves terrific driver’s car

It is: All-new version of the car that was best-seller in Britain from 1999 to 2008. Planned in Europe to be a global car, with 80 per cent of common parts in 120 markets.

On sale: March, with an estate version on the way.

Comprises: At launch, a choice of three petrol and four diesel engines, all under 140g/km of CO2, some with stop-start, all with active radiator shutters to improve economy and emissions. The 67mpg, 109g/km 1.6 diesel is available in each of the four trim levels. Twin clutch automatic gears are an option on the 2-litre diesel engine.

Cost: From £15,995 for the Edge but Ford says this entry model has £1,000 more goodies than the old Style entry model. This “old” Focus will continue to be built in Spain until September to meet demand.

On the road: Electric power steering and torque control using the brakes gives improved grip and feel and reduces understeer at speed, not that the ordinary driver will notice.
