He was a mechanic, so he knew that whatever he chose, he would be able to keep it on the road.

But even he was surprised with his choice: a 1937 Rolls-Royce originally ordered by a Scottish lord.

That was 42 years ago. And Mr Mitchell, now 67, says the car has not caused him a moment’s trouble.

“I always wanted a Rolls-Royce and when I saw it, I had to have it,” he said. “It was complete but it needed restoring, which took me 15 years to finish.

“But it’s a beautiful car which I’ve driven up and down the country. It’s been a pleasure to own, but I shan’t miss it. It’s time for it to go to a new owner who will use it well.”

Mr Mitchell, a mechanic, says he is winding down from his family business of garages, civil engineering and plant hire in Ossett, West Yorkshire.

The Rolls-Royce is a 25/30 D Back Limousine which is powered by a 4,350cc engine.

The 25/30 was built between 1936 and 1938. Only the chassis and mechanical parts were made by Rolls-Royce. The body was made by a coachbuilder selected by the owner.
