On the grapevine

Domaine Gayda is a terrific estate in the Languedoc which has grabbed the quality of grapes available in this region and bolted on serious winemaking. The result is a set of wines that far exceed expectations. I worked my way through the range and was bowled over.

Start with L'Archat Grenache 2007 for its intense, lively red fruits, with touches of pepper and a freshness on the finish (8.40). Move up to Occitane Rouge 2006 (11.60) which I paired with a medium rare rump steak and found perfect. Then move on to Chemin de Moscou 2006 (18.95) which is a real knife and fork wine, in a deep savoury, herb-dusted way. Field and Fawcett (01904 489073) has the range.

M&S cuts prices

Marks and Spencer will knock 25 per cent off the price of all its wines from next Monday until September 6. The usual temptation is to save on cheaper wines, but the best buys are at the top of the price range. Head for the Crozes Hermitage from Collonge, Rioja Pago Real from Telmo Rodriguez and Petit Chablis from La Chablisienne.

Australian focus

Friday night is tasting night at Latitude in the Calls, Leeds. August features Australia, so head there to taste wines from Yering Station followed by Tulloch next week.
