On the grapevine

It was good to meet so many enthusiastic bar tenders and cocktail makers at the northern heat of the 42Below Cocktail World Cup held at Jake's Bar in Leeds.

Twelve bartenders from the North- East had to create an original cocktail, make and serve it in five minutes, while giving a running commentary. The three winners were Rob Worsley from Boutique, James Coston from Jake's Bar and Scott Tyler from Bibsi. They will compete again in the national finals in London in October. The winner will go forward to the world final in New Zealand.

Bordeaux 2009

The excitement surrounding this vintage is incredible, but there are bargains further down the scale. My favourites from recent tastings include Branaire Ducru, Berliquet and Ch La Clemence. Check out the Berry Bros website (www.bbr.com) and our local merchant Bon Coeur Wine (www.bcfw.co.uk). Beware of dealing with any company that you haven't heard of before.

Made from the same grape variety as Beaujolais but sourced from the Rhne, Vin de Pays de l'Ardche Gamay 2009 (Marks and Spencer) captures all the young bright cherry fruit of the grape in a lighter style.
