in my kitchen: Frances Atkins, of The Yorke Arms, Ramsgill
What was the first dish you ate which made you want to make it?
The rows upon rows of different coloured bottled fruit and vegetables in my grandmother’s larder, seen through the eyes of a child. This left a lasting impression with a desire to replicate.

Hide AdWho was your first mentor in the kitchen? How did that person inspire you?
My mother was my first mentor in the kitchen; being naturally artistic herself, she was a daily inspiration. I was allowed to cook for our family on most days as I found it such a pleasure.
At what point did you think you were able to make a living out of it?
I never thought about making a living by doing something that came naturally to me. I found cooking – and still do – an all-consuming occupation. I have been one of those very fortunate people who never had any difficulties realising how I wish to fill my life.
Whose cooking do you most admire, and why?

Hide AdI most admire the achievements of Sophie Pic, who is a French female three-star Michelin chef. She, like myself, has always cooked, and her original style, presentation and flavour are awesome.
What are your pet hates and likes?.
As regards my culinary pet hates – badly prepared food, badly cooked food and chemical additives. I find there is no excuse.
I love going out for dinner and to friends’ houses. It is always such a pleasure to enjoy other people’s creative abilities.
