Organic brewery’s win has Prince’s stamp of approval

HIGH above Cragg Vale in Hebden Bridge is the Little Valley Brewery.

Here Dutch-born owner Wim van der Spek, a Bavarian-qualified Master Brewer with an MSc in food technology, makes his award-winning organic beer.

Wim met his English partner Sue Cooper during a cycling trip from Holland to Tibet. After the trip they settled in Hebden Bridge and founded Little Valley Brewery.

Now the pair’s dream of creating award-winning beers has come true with the seal of approval from none other the Prince of Wales.

The small organic Yorkshire brewery won a host of accolades at the 2011 Organic Food Awards, including Winner of the Beer and Cider category for Tod’s Blonde.

The winners were at the Start Festival, held at Clarence House, which is part of the national Start initiative, established by the Prince’s Charities Foundation to promote and celebrate sustainable living.

The festival, which is themed around sustainable food and farming, was attended by Prince Charles, who met and congratulated the winners.

Now in its 23rd year, the Soil Association Organic Food Awards are the most prestigious and widely respected in the organic sector, recognising and celebrating the contribution organic food producers make to the food and farming industry.

Over three days at the Duke of Cambridge organic pub in London, an expert judging panel of 35 food critics, broadcasters and chefs, including Hardeep Singh Kohli and Jo Wood, applied their foody expertise and finely attuned taste buds to nearly 400 products across 12 categories, from baby food to store cupboard staples and vegetables. Judging in all categories was by blind tasting, with products rated according to smell, texture, appearance and taste.

As well as Little Valley’s Tod’s Blonde, four other beers produced by the wholly organic brewery were awarded Highly Commended: the Python IPA, the Moor Ale, the Hebden’s Wheat and the Withens Pale Ale.

Helen Browning, director of the Soil Association said: “It’s a pleasure to see Little Valley Brewery pick up this award. At a time when people are showing an increasing interest in where their food comes from and how it is made, the Organic Food Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and innovation of producers like Little Valley Brewery, who take so much care in brewing and sourcing their hops and malts. The end result tastes great and meets the highest standards of sustainability and quality. It’s a fantastic achievement.”

Wim said that he and Sue were delighted with the awards: “It’s good to get this kind of recognition. We are working very hard to develop the quality of our beers and it’s nice to see that work starting to pay off.

“It was a pleasure to meet HRH Prince Charles and to catch up with people generally within the sector – all in all we had a great day out.”
